A socket is the cheap part that ruins expensive ones. A chrome socket put on an impact wrench splits and takes the bolt head with it — impact work calls for black, thick-walled Cr-Mo only.

How to choose

  • A 72-tooth ratchet needs 5° per click — in a tight engine bay that is the difference between working and stripping half of it out.
  • 1/2" or 3/4" drive — 1/2" for passenger cars, 3/4" wherever torque passes 1000 Nm.
  • Adapters carry torque worse than a single socket; under impact treat them as a temporary fix.
  • Wall thickness decides whether the socket reaches into an alloy wheel recess.
